Rust lets you bind almost any action or console command to a key. A few binds save a lot of time on long runs, swims and farming. Here are the most useful ones and how to set them up.
How to add a bind
- Press F1 in Rust to open the console.
- Paste the bind and press Enter. Change the key letter to any key you don't use.
- Type
writecfg and press Enter so the bind is saved to keys.cfg and kept after a restart.
Movement
- Auto-run:
bind q forward;sprint. Press Q and you keep sprinting forward. Press Shift + W to stop.
- Auto-swim:
bind 0 forward;sprint;jump. Handy for long swims. Press Space, Shift and W to cancel.
- Toggle crouch:
bind c duck. You stay crouched until you press Ctrl.
Farming
- Crouch and auto-attack (toggle):
bind z attack;duck. Great for chopping trees or hitting nodes without holding the mouse. Left click and Ctrl cancel it.
- Crouch and attack only while held:
bind z +attack;+duck. The + makes it work only while you hold the key.
PvP and quality of life
- Light or laser on aim:
bind mouse1 +lighttoggle;+attack2. Your flashlight or laser turns on when you aim down sights, which helps a lot at night.
- Console plus combat log:
bind f1 consoletoggle;combatlog. F1 opens the console and shows your recent combat log, so you can check who hit you and with what.
Fixing a mistake
To remove a bind, use bind x clear (with your key instead of x), then run writecfg again. Test new binds somewhere safe first, especially auto-attack, so you don't waste ammo.
