Valve shipped a new Counter-Strike 2 update on 22 October 2026, and this one is all about map scripting. If you only play Premier or Competitive, nothing changes for you: no weapon, map or matchmaking changes are listed. But for Workshop creators and community servers it is a big step.
What's new for mapmakers
- Hostage scripting – a new
CSHostage class shows if a hostage is being picked up, carried or rescued, and who rescued it. New events fire on pick-up start/abort, pick-up, drop, rescue and kill.
- Precaching –
Instance.Precache lets a map load assets mid-match and check whether they are loaded on the server, on each client, or for everyone.
- New
GameRules export – start/end warmup, read and add team score, end a round and give team money, all from the map script.
- New
Console export – read convars and set them with Console.SetConvar, which Valve says is not restricted by sv_cheats. Instance.Msg is renamed Console.Log.
- Custom HUD – new layout classes react when the team menu or chat is open.
- Radar –
radar_element now shows on the radar in every game mode, not just Rush.
Old functions that moved to GameRules and Console still work but are now deprecated, so existing maps won't break straight away.
Why it matters
Valve keeps building cs_script (the JavaScript system behind CS2 map scripts) patch by patch. Hostage rescue modes, custom warmups, scoring and economy rules can now live inside the map itself, which is the kind of thing CS:GO servers used to need third-party plugins for. Expect new hostage and custom game modes on the Workshop soon.
This is the second CS2 patch in eight days, after the 14 October demo viewer update.
